Here are a few scrapbooking ideas and techniques to get your imagination firing. Experimenting with techniques and trying new mediums can unleash new ideas when you are feeling stuck or uninspired.

The sky is the limit when choosing cardstock. Cardstock paper is a great construction material because of its sturdiness. You could, for example, fill a page with many small photos. Then using cardstock, create little door flaps that can be opened up to reveal the photo underneath.

Die-cuts are a popular scrapbooking technique. These are small pieces of paper or plastic that be made into any letters, shapes, logos or other visual elements. How you use them is up to your imagination. They can be glued down to the page. They can be used as stencils for tracing designs, or for using as a mask as you spray some ink or glitter. They can be used as a cutting stencil to cut holes in the shape of the pattern. Peek down into the next page.

Try experimenting with patterned scrapbook paper. You can make some funky and unique effects by creating backgrounds, or cutting shapes into the patterns. Use it as a decorative border that surrounds the page. Make a collage illustration. For example, use a wavy blue pattern to create the look of water for a beach-vacation page. Just look at the patterns and colors and imagine what shapes or effects they could represent.

Using ribbon and lace is a classy technique that gives a feeling of elegance and delicacy. Create a border to frame a treasured photograph. Add color and texture to an otherwise flat display. If you are a sewer, you can try sewing or stitching decorative patterns together. Show off your talent in other areas, and create a unique effect!

You are not limited to adding things to the page. You can also remove parts of the page. Use shaped punches, die-cuts, stencils or plain old scissors to create interesting patterns. Some scrapbook paper comes with two patterns, one on each side. Try punching some holes, or cutting some shapes into a page, and the gluing a patterned piece of paper onto the opposite side. Now you have some patterned shapes peeking through.

Crop photos and drawings into themed shapes like circles, diamonds or even numbers and letters! A romantic photo can be cut into a heart shape. A birthday photo can be cut into the shape of a balloon. Use photos and drawings as another creative graphic element. There is nothing saying that you have to keep all of your photos in a quare shape. Make sure you make a copy of your originals first. If you change your mind later, you always have the option of going back.

Try adding embossing to build up the page with color, texture and design. Embossing effects can be created with all sorts of designs and colors and can give a real sense of depth. Sprinkle some colored embossing powder and make it permanent by heating it up on the page.

Clear stamps and rubber stamps are a fun way to work with shapes and patterns. Use them to create little graphics patterns as a border around a page. Get custom stamps made that contain your signature, a family crest, or anything else that you can think of. The main benefit of a stamp is that it can be used repeatedly, so it can be very useful to use with letters and numbers. Clear stamps allow you to see where you are stamping, for precise placement.

Make some pockets! You can either purchase pre-made pocket pages, or create your own by using sturdy scrapbook paper. Tuck special momentos into the pockets, such as love letters, photos, poems or anything that you don’t want to glue down, but would be nice to pull out and look at. You can even make small shaped pockets, such as a little triangle in the corner of the page. Or what about an egg-shaped pocket for an Easter theme?

As you begin to experiment with new techniques, new unique scrapbooking ideas will come to you. Be adventurous and have some fun with your projects.
